Trent Alexander-Arnold’s unforgettable moment against Barcelona hinged on the ballboy, who has subsequently achieved amazing things.
May 7th 2019. Minutes left in Liverpool’s Champions League semifinal matchup versus Barcelona. Corner. Alexander-Arnold whips it low to an unguarded Divock Orgi, who scores quickly to advance the Reds to the championship game.
However, the ball boy, a young man by the name of Oakley Cannonier, deserves all the praise. He threw a pass to Alexander-Arnold in a flash so the corner could be taken thanks to his lightning-quick responses after Gerard Pique conceded the corner.
But what is Cannonier doing these days?
He scored 40 goals for the Reds’ Under 18 team the previous year, and despite some injuries this year, he has scored seven goals in four UEFA Youth League games.
He first trained with the Liverpool first team last year, and Cannonier told the club website that Jurgen Klopp afterwards thanked him for being a part of that memorable Anfield occasion.
The boss approached me after I trained with the first team a few weeks ago and said, “I just need to thank you” for what I did.
He continued, “Liverpool were obviously losing, so the assistant manager instructed our coach Carl that the ball needed to be in rapid motion for the tension of the game and whatnot because we were down 3-0. You had to move quickly and get the ball back onto the pitch.
“It’s still a little crazy. People that contact me on social media refer to me as a Liverpool legend.
